Submission + - Microsoft, Google agree to NGO code of conduct

Aditi.Tuteja writes: "Technology companies have come under fire for providing equipment or software that permits governments to censor information or monitor the online or offline activities of their citizens. For example, last year, Google's approach to the China market was criticized over its creation of a censored, local version of its search engine.

Microsoft, Google, and two other technology companies will develop a code of conduct with a coalition of nongovernmental organizations (NGO) to promote freedom of expression and privacy rights, they announced Friday.

The two companies along with Yahoo, and Vodafone Group said the new guidelines are the result of talks with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School."

Submission + - Cisco granted triple play patent

Aditi.Tuteja writes: "Cisco was recently granted a patent on a "system and method for providing integrated voice, video and data to customer premises over a single network." Sound a lot like triple play? Yes It is.

The patent, which was filed back in 2000, describes a system that would allow consumers to receive all of their home services through one service provider instead of two or three.

It also makes mention of the inefficiency of forcing consumers to receive all of their home services through different infastructures that aren't easily compatible. The patent's wording seems broad enough to cover nearly all existing implementations of "triple play," and some are scared that Cisco will try to wield some legal power against such providers as AT&T and Comcast with its newly granted patent. If such a thing were to happen, progress on Project Lightspeed could slow even more and providers would likely have to pay a hefty fee to Cisco before proceeding with their plans."

This "Hack Day" mixed Web programming competitions, overnight slumber party and a music festival where pop music superstar Beck had been hired to play a concert on the Yahoo campus.

Considering the different needs for the huge user base, some users would like to benefit from one or other web application integrated within yahoo mail, although Yahoo is big but it can't build or buy each innovation, they decided to give away their code publicly."
