Submission + - BlackBerry remains committed to smartphone business (baytoday.ca)

AchilleTalon writes: BlackBerry CEO John Chen refuses to give up on the company's hardware business despite lacklustre sales of its first Android-powered phone, the Priv.

The Canadian smartphone maker (TSX:BB) reported a US$670 million net loss in the first quarter of its 2017 financial year, but said its recovery plan for the year remains on track.

Chen, who has stated the company's No. 1 goal is to make its smartphone device business profitable this fiscal year, said he expects the company's new mobility solutions segment to break even or record a slight profit during the third quarter, which ends Nov. 30, 2016.

Submission + - First person saved by a police drone in Canada (theverge.com)

AchilleTalon writes: As the US continues to grapple with the idea of letting drones fly through the country's airspace, our neighbors to the north have reported a new milestone for unmanned aerial technology: the first life saved using a drone. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the province of Saskatchewan announced yesterday that they successfully used the small Draganflyer X4-ES helicopter drone to locate and treat an injured man whose car had flipped over in a remote, wooded area in near-freezing temperatures. Zenon Dragan, president and founder of the Draganfly company that makes the drone, said in a statement: "to our knowledge, this is the first time that a life may have been saved with the use of a sUAS (small Unmanned Aerial System) helicopter."

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Best OSS embedded development platform

AchilleTalon writes: As many of you may know, there is two main competitors on the Windows platform for embedded software developement, namely IAR and Keil. By embedded development, I mean development for microprocessors like the wellknown 8051 and the likes. I do not intent to mean mobile platforms which include a complete OS in first place.

I am seeking for alternatives to IAR and Keil in the OSS world. Even if I can find pieces of code here and there, I haven't found yet a fully integrated development platform. Does it exist? What do you use, you the serious embedded developers out there?

Submission + - Determine dinosaur's skin colour and why the fossil preserved intact (lightsource.ca)

AchilleTalon writes: Experiments will determine dinosaur’s skin colour and why the fossil preserved intact

One of the only well preserved dinosaur skin samples ever found is being tested at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron to determine skin colour and to explain why the fossilized specimen remained intact after 70-million years.

University of Regina physicist Mauricio Barbi said the hadrosaur, a duck-billed dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period (100-65 million years ago), was found close to a river bed near Grand Prairie, Alberta.

Submission + - Real-world generating capacity of wind farms at large scales overestimated (phys.org)

AchilleTalon writes: Research by Harvard professor David Keith suggests that the global capacity for energy generation from wind power has been overestimated, and that geophysical / climate effects of turbines will reduce the benefits of large-scale power installations.

"People have often thought there's no upper bound for wind power—that it's one of the most scalable power sources," says Harvard applied physicist David Keith. After all, gusts and breezes don't seem likely to "run out" on a global scale in the way oil wells might run dry.
