Journal Journal: Viruses

Email sent to the senders of virus reports:
----START----

These emails sent to the purported sender of a virus laden email are worse than useless as there isn't a moderm virus which fails to forge the sender. I know for a fact that the 20 or so copies of various viruses that turn up in my mail scanner are not from the shown sender. Sometimes I can be bothered to make a report to the isp owning the netblock of the time and ip of the infected user, in the hopes they might contact the user and, at least, terminate their service until they stop sending virus-laden emails.

However, your software sending virus reports in causing me just as much annoyance as the viruses themselves. Why, in this age of SMTP-equipped viruses, are you sending emails to the faked sender of a virus?
How many of your virus report emails reach their destination (a virus infested user) and how many are sent to innocent virus-free people who happen to be in the same list of emails as the recipient of the virus being reported?
----END----

Now, chances of an actual human reading it?

Journal Journal: Website

Bloody webserver's gone down for good. Apparently the hosting provider sent me an email, which went into the email address I always sign (spammed email) and got fed into my bayesian filter. Damn.

So... thats why tristanscott.co.uk has disappeared. It will be back. one possibility is it'll be back on an xbox and adsl line. or another hosting provider. problem is, i want php, mysql, gd, safe mode off and other odd features. Maybe an xbox is the way to go. After all, there is one floating about here.

Journal Journal: Collapse Game

I'm writing a java game for another uni project that uses blocks. You can click on 3 or more connected blocks and remove them.
I've now got the double-buffering working too. Discovered a bug in the prevois implementation which meant it didnt actually work. oops.

Journal Journal: MIPS sim

Now got a CLI working for my MIPSim as well as the gui. the only difficult bit was extracting a filename.
Possible filename inputs:
'load'
'load file'
'load this/file'
'load this/file '
'load "this" '
'load "this'
'load "this file" '
'load this "file " errr '

now works, chucking out errors where appropriate. debug more is a bt excessive cos it's designed to output to a GUI with more information capablility, redrawing over the same spot. Never mind.

Got to drive to Bath to pick up a friend tomorrow. Still, he's paying for petrol and its a nice long fast run.

Journal Journal: Bloody Print Servers

Bloody print servers...
Setting up a wireless network with 1 pci card and 3 Access points, and 1 Access point/broadband router.
Estimated Time: 3 hours (expecting multiple subnets and complicated routing)
Actual Time: 0.5 hours (bridging mode)

Setting up a DesignJet 430 + printer server
Estimated Time: 1 hour
Actual Time: 4 hours

Bloody thing had a manual printed in 2000, assumed you were using IPX/SPX (gaaah) and defaulted to 1.1.1.1 every time i reset it to reboot the firmware.
Cups would print to it on JetDirect:9100...
But the CD that came with it did not have any lpr or JetDirect support, for win98 or XP. XP seems to have at least some clue what lpr is, so maybe ill get it working on XP and share it via samba.

Journal Journal: MIPS sim

my MIPS sim can now sll, sri, syscall
and normal add (register = register+register)

now, it'll run the sample program, but i need more... and a write up. i HATE writing up my projects.

On the bright side, my collapse game is now collapsing into the middle (round gravitational centre) rather than left.

Journal Journal: MIPS sim

got my MIPS simulator in java working, it will now beq, bne, addi, addui and j.

If you're wondering disbelievingly why on earth i'd code a emulator in a jvm... its a uni coursework. personally, i'd write it in c. or C++. java is pathetically slow...

Journal Journal: Qube 2

Borrowed a friends Qube 2 and mucked about with it. Downloaded and ran the restore cd (which wouldnt boot through our 100mBit switched hub). 256Mb ram on order, and im thinking of putting a later kernel on it... linux 2.0 would you believe! 32gb hard limit on partitions (or maybe disks, i forget)...and a 120Gb is a mere 50 quid (trade price ex-vat in GBP)... but 128mb 3.3v edo Simm is 38 quid each, also trade ex vat...
