Journal Journal: why technoCon, part deux

I am also something of a contrarian where it comes to technology.

1) A Jaguar design engineer told me once he was into CAD: cardboard aided design. Don't mess with a complicated finite element analysis when you can answer a question with something simple and low-tech.

2) I agree with Clifford Stoll's notion that libraries and schools can get along quite nicely with minimum computerization. Give me stacks to walk through and see which books are shelved next to each other. On the other hand, if you could put all the content of a decent library online, that'd be way cool to google THAT.

Journal Journal: irrational men

Here's an aphorism my wife thought apt:

Never get between a man and his irrationality.

This was occasioned by son and I disagreeing over whether the light switch at the bottom of he stairs should be positioned "up" for off or "down":

No problem is so intractible as two men with contradictory irrationalities.

Journal Journal: Why technoCon

It's short for Technological Con Man. Not because I'm in out to cheat anybody, but because I'm into technology. There's something of a Con in technology itself. Jacques Ellul is to blame for making me think this way.

So, kindly pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
