I've been at my new job now for about 3.5 months. We're in between a asp to .Net conversion and it pretty much sucks.

The lead .Net developer has finally seen the error of his ways and agrees that Visual Source Safe (VSS) is a raging piece of dog poo. I'm trying to get him to try out Subversion or TortiseCVS as I beleive they both offer VS.Net intergration. I know TortiseCVS does already... we'll see what happens.

So anyway, I have the potential of starting some independent development within the company doing some Java on a pc104 device that I may be designing. It's exciting as the off the shelf equivalent would be something like $50k initially and another couple hundred/device/month. My early eastimates show that it could be as little as $25k initially and $25/device/month.

This might be the project that moves me from a "mid level developer who gets assigned various pseudo-crap projects" into the more advanced areas coming up. Plus it may be the deciding factor to push things from a huge .Net deployment into some Java/jsp beta testing.

Muhahaha.

I'm not sure if anyone actually reads my journal, but I'm posting again anyway...

For the past few years, I've been doing java/jsp development for interacting with databases and xml. It's some pretty cool stuff and when I started, we were on the bleeding edge of xml schema along with a bunch of other stuff. We started that project in vb/asp, but the organization did not support it in house, so we had to switch.

Well, that job ended. And as of this past Monday (12/15), I'm with a new company. I'm doing development interacting with databases and (hopefully) xml, but now I'm workinging entirely in a .Net enviroment. It's quite different to say the least. I'm running into some rather large problems, but I'm not sure if it's just my unfamiliarity with the system or if the system just sucks. Right now, I'm waiting for one of my new co-workers to give me a hand debugging some of my vb.

Anyway, I'm just using this for a brief post before I get my web server online. I already have a LAMP box all good to go and I'm hosting some forums on it, but I've been too lazy/busy to actually design and set up a web page.

One of my primary goals with it was a nice place to have my resume accessible. Fortunately, I have a pretty stable (knock on wood) position for now, so that motivation is approximately zero.
