Journal Journal: Trying to develop the ultimate Linux based multimedia pc

Untitled Document

Hello:

I’ve been playing around with the idea of creating an inexpensive, multimedia home server using open source technology. As PCs and gaming consoles become more similar in architecture, I was thinking combining several media and entertainment options in one, inexpensive console. The options would include, but not limited to:

  • Email and web surfing (Firefox and Thunderbird)
  • Media jukebox (Either Helix or another MP3 player)
  • Internet radio
  • Gaming console with installed MAME and OpenGL
  • DVR/DVD system

Because I’m an engineer and a hacker at heart (and partly because I would like to market this to low income communities) the system would entirely open source. A person could either pay to have one built or download the kit for themselves. Also, since its open source, anyone can design software for it. I’ve scour the net for research, but I’ve don’t seem to be getting anywhere. Any ideas or suggest?

Peace
