Great open source AI model out of Europe Date: Oct 07 2026
Summary: Mistral Large 4 is easily one of the strongest models Mistral has released. It's fast, capable, and particularly good for coding, agentic workflows, and technical work. The combination of strong performance, multimodal capabilities, a huge context window, and open weights makes it especially compelling, even if it doesn't quite match the best frontier models in every situation.
Positive: Mistral Large 4 is a big improvement over previous Mistral models. I am impressed with its coding, reasoning, and ability to handle longer, more complicated tasks without losing track of the instructions. The multimodal capabilities are also quite good, especially when working with documents, charts, and images.
Negative: The model is powerful, but it isn't as consistently reliable as the very best closed models on difficult reasoning tasks. I occasionally had to correct or re-prompt it when an answer sounded confident but missed an important detail. It's also an enormous model, so running the open weights yourself will require substantial hardware.
