Compare Book Check Genie vs. Edith

Book Check Genie is an online tool designed for fiction writers, independent publishers, and their editorial teams to analyze manuscript continuity. By uploading files in formats such as DOCX, PDF, EPUB, RTF, TXT, or Markdown, users receive detailed reports that highlight possible inconsistencies relating to character information, timelines, numerical data, plot developments, worldbuilding aspects, narrative perspective, voice, tense variations, name discrepancies, and recurring phrases. These reports include references to specific chapters along with relevant excerpts for context. Authors have the ability to monitor how they resolve issues, compare revised versions against prior analyses, and organize multiple books into a series to ensure consistency across narratives. The service also generates timelines, tracks plot threads and relationships, evaluates pacing and readability metrics, and allows for report exports in PDF or CSV formats, along with options for read-only sharing. Additionally, users can invite co-authors, editors, or beta readers to view their work without the ability to make changes. It's important to note that while the reports facilitate human review, the service does not alter the text of the manuscript itself, ensuring that the original voice of the author remains intact.

Edith offers a service for writers seeking an authentic critique of their completed manuscripts before investing significantly in a professional editor. Initially, she provides an editorial letter after reading the entire novel, up to 150,000 words, evaluating whether the narrative functions effectively and identifying key areas for improvement for just $15, with the first 10,000 words available for free. Following that, the comprehensive editing process, priced at $249 as a one-time fee, encompasses five distinct phases: developmental editing focusing on plot, character, and pacing; structural editing to enhance scene and chapter organization; stylistic editing that scrutinizes the prose on a line-by-line basis; copyediting to ensure grammatical accuracy and consistency while maintaining a running style sheet; and finally, proofreading to catch any remaining errors. Throughout the process, every piece of feedback can be discussed in a chat, allowing for an interactive dialogue where you can ask questions, express concerns, and come to a mutual understanding, mirroring the experience of collaborating with a human editor. Edith takes a holistic approach, keeping the entire manuscript in mind and recalling your preferences at every editing stage. While she offers suggestions for improvement, she refrains from rewriting your words, ensuring that your unique voice remains intact. The edited work is returned in a Word document, and rest assured, your manuscripts are never utilized for AI training purposes, preserving your intellectual property. This personalized editing experience is designed to empower writers and enhance their storytelling.
