Users can access and play videos directly from computers, servers, or NAS systems utilizing SMB and UPnP protocols, as well as from external USB storage devices. All video sources are efficiently combined into a single collection for easy access. The app also provides automatic online fetching of descriptions for movies and TV shows, complete with posters and backdrops. It features integrated subtitle downloads and utilizes hardware acceleration for video decoding, compatible with a wide range of devices and formats. Supporting various audio tracks and subtitles, it accommodates popular file formats such as MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV, and FLV, along with subtitle types including SRT, SUB, ASS, and SMI. Additionally, for compatible hardware like the Nexus Player, NVidia SHIELD TV, and certain Rockchip and AmLogic based TV boxes, it allows AC3/DTS passthrough via HDMI or S/PDIF. Users can enjoy movies in formats such as VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX versions 3, 4, and 5, WMV, and even H.264. One of MPlayer's standout features is its extensive selection of output drivers, which include X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, and DirectFB. Additionally, it offers compatibility with GGI, SDL (along with all their respective drivers), VESA (on any VESA-compatible hardware, even without X11), and several low-level drivers specific to graphics cards like Matrox, 3Dfx, and ATI.
