Description
Parquet was developed to provide the benefits of efficient, compressed columnar data representation to all projects within the Hadoop ecosystem. Designed with a focus on accommodating complex nested data structures, Parquet employs the record shredding and assembly technique outlined in the Dremel paper, which we consider to be a more effective strategy than merely flattening nested namespaces. This format supports highly efficient compression and encoding methods, and various projects have shown the significant performance improvements that arise from utilizing appropriate compression and encoding strategies for their datasets. Furthermore, Parquet enables the specification of compression schemes at the column level, ensuring its adaptability for future developments in encoding technologies. It is crafted to be accessible for any user, as the Hadoop ecosystem comprises a diverse range of data processing frameworks, and we aim to remain neutral in our support for these different initiatives. Ultimately, our goal is to empower users with a flexible and robust tool that enhances their data management capabilities across various applications.
Description
OrbGIS is a comprehensive web GIS platform developed in Sweden, serving as a contemporary alternative to ArcGIS Online tailored for municipalities, agencies, consultancies, and researchers. It enables users to upload various data formats such as Shapefile, GeoPackage, GeoJSON, GeoParquet, KML, or CSV, while the platform automatically manages projection, indexing, and tiling, even for extensive countrywide datasets using accurate coordinate systems like SWEREF 99 TM. With the same data layers, users can create web maps, dashboards, surveys, story maps (Journeys), and print layouts, which can then be shared with either their organization or the general public. The pricing structure is straightforward, charging a single rate for every 5 GB of storage and each editing user; viewers can access the platform for free without restrictions, ensuring no credits or license tiers complicate usage. Additionally, the data is securely hosted within the EU, with options for contractual Swedish residency. A complimentary QGIS plugin allows seamless connection between the portal and desktop GIS for editing and uploads, while a free converter facilitates the transformation of Esri File Geodatabases into open formats. Users can also take advantage of a 30-day free trial, requiring no credit card to get started, making it an appealing option for those looking to explore GIS capabilities.
